That's why I was asking if I needed to obtain an updated "free" license (different from trial) to access further 6.5 updates. I expected them to release an "Update 1" for my free license, but all they have is 6.5.0a. Typically I don't upgrade until at least "Update 1" is released. My license is free, with no time-limit, but also no vCenter. So a 60-day trial isn't going to work for me.

I've been upgrading it since and am now running 6.0u2 on that same hardware. The box I built started out as 4.1 back in 2011. I'm an enthusiast running a free version of ESXi to house various VMs that are up 24x7 to provide services for my home network and locally hosted apps. Maybe in vNext you can log directly into your My VMware account from the Web Client and have it automatically pull in your licenses.I think there's a disconnect here. This new feature is definitely a step in the right direction. If you have any existing keys, it will update them with the My VMware settings, if there are new keys it will add them with the notes from My VMware. The next screen will show what licenses were part of the CSV and give you an Overview. Click Next.Īt this point, the uploaded CSV file will be analyzed to see what licenses can be imported into your vCenter Inventory. If you have not downloaded it yet, you can select on Learn how to generate this CSV file to be shown the steps. Now you will browse to the file you downloaded from my. In the top right corner you will see an option to Import License Keys Data… Log into your vSphere 6.5 Flash client ( and click on Home and then Licenses. You will need this to complete the next steps. The report will take about a minute to generate. In my case i have selected all accounts and then click Create. You will be asked which account you would like to select, and if there was a specific timeframe to select. To start you need to generate a report from my.Ĭlick on the Available Reports dropdown, and select the Product Licenses, Details and History. When you are adding in your VMware licenses, you now have an option to Import License Keys Data… As usual right away I have upgraded the homelab and have already found a neat new feature. So as everyone has probably seen, vSphere 6.5 is now GA.
